How to Buy a Ring as a Gift Without Knowing Their Size

You have found a ring they would love. The missing detail is the size. Before you guess, use a ring they already wear—or measure the intended finger—and match the result with Orvielle’s Ring Size Guide.

Open Orvielle’s Ring Size Guide → It includes a printable ring sizer, instructions for measuring an existing ring, a finger-measuring method and a calculator with US/CAN, UK/AUS and German size conversions.

This guide is about finding the size for a ring gift. Start with the measurement you can obtain, then use it to choose the correct size for the design you have in mind.

Start with the right hand and finger

An existing ring is useful only if it fits the finger where the new ring will be worn. A ring from their middle finger does not establish their ring-finger size. The same finger on the opposite hand may also fit differently.

If you are planning a surprise, first find out which finger the gift is intended for. With their permission, use a ring they already wear comfortably there. A friend or family member can help if they know the person’s current size for that particular finger, rather than offering a general guess.

Keep the measurement and the finger together in your notes: for example, “right-hand ring finger, measured from the ring they wear there.” That is more useful than remembering a size number without knowing what it refers to.

Have a ring to reference? Use the printable ring sizer

In the Ring Size Guide, choose Print & Place. Download the printable sizer and follow these steps:

    1. Print at 100% scale. Turn off “Fit to Page” and other automatic page-scaling options.
    2. Check the printed ruler. The calibration line on the sheet should measure exactly 50 mm. If it does not, correct the print settings before comparing a ring with the circles.
    3. Place the reference ring over the circles. Match the inside edge of the band to the circle, following the printed guide.
    4. Record the size system. Keep “US/CAN”, “UK/AUS” or “German” beside the result so you do not mix different systems.

A correctly scaled print matters. Enlarging a page on screen, taking a screenshot or printing at a reduced scale changes the circles and can lead to the wrong size.

No printer? Measure the ring’s internal diameter

The guide’s Measure a Ring You Own method uses a ruler. Lay the reference ring flat and measure straight across the centre of the opening, from one inside edge to the other. Start at the ruler’s zero mark and record the distance in millimetres.

Measure the opening, not the outside of the band. Including the metal makes the measurement larger than the internal diameter you need.

Enter the result into the guide’s calculator with Internal Diameter selected. These examples come from Orvielle’s current chart:

Examples from the Orvielle Ring Size Guide
    Internal diameterUS/CAN ring size
    16.5 mm6
    17.3 mm7
    18.1 mm8

Use the full conversion chart and calculator for other measurements. The table shows how to read the chart; it is not a recommendation to choose one of these sizes without measuring.

No reference ring? Measure the intended finger

If they do not own a suitable ring, use the guide’s Wrap & Mark method together. Cut a thin, straight strip of paper, roughly 8 cm long and no wider than 5 mm. Wrap it snugly around the base of the intended finger without compressing it, mark where the ends overlap, then lay the strip flat and measure that length in millimetres.

This measurement is the circumference, not the diameter. Select Circumference in the calculator before entering it. Putting a circumference measurement into the diameter setting will give the wrong comparison.

Measuring together reveals that you are considering a ring, but it does not have to reveal the design. You can keep the colour, shape and occasion as the surprise while confirming the part that needs to fit.

Luma Ring 3.8. Choose the design you love, then confirm the size for the intended finger.

Check the measurement before choosing a size

Take two or three measurements instead of relying on one quick reading. Orvielle’s guide recommends measuring toward the end of the day and avoiding cold hands. If the readings differ noticeably, measure again rather than forcing a result from inconsistent numbers.

Band width matters too. A broad band can feel different from a slim ring in the same stated size. Compare the gift’s shape with the reference ring, and ask Orvielle for help if the designs are very different or the measurement falls between chart sizes.

Match the result to the ring you want to give

Once you have the measurement, browse the Orvielle ring collection and check the actual size options on the product page. The size chart explains measurements; it does not mean every ring is offered in every size shown on the chart.

For a polished curved band, you can explore the Luma Ring 3.8. For any design, keep the material, selected size and intended finger clear before ordering. A decorative measurement in a product name is not a substitute for selecting the wearer’s ring size.

What if you still cannot confirm their ring size?

There is no dependable way to choose an exact ring size from someone’s height, clothing size or a photograph of their hand. If you cannot access a suitable reference ring or measure their finger, ask them for their size—or make choosing the ring together part of the gift.

Before ordering, read the current shipping and returns policy. Do not assume every ring can be resized or exchanged; check the terms for the particular piece and any personalization.

Start with the Orvielle Ring Size Guide, keep a record of the measurement and size system, and bring any uncertainty to our team. The aim is to give the ring you wanted to give, in a size chosen with care.
